The manuscript, “Genome-wide association study on three behaviors tested in an open field in heterogeneous stock rats identifies multiple loci implicated in psychiatric disorders”, was accepted for publication in Frontiers Psychiatry, section Addictive Disorders. A genome-wide association study (GWAS) of behaviors measured in an open field was conducted in HS rats. 30 genome wide significant quantitative trait loci and 13 candidate genes were identified for these traits. The article, “Polymorphic SNPs, short tandem repeats and structural variants are responsible for differential gene expression across C57BL/6 and C57BL/10 substrains”, has been accepted for publication in Cell Genomics. This article compares the widely used C57BL/6J inbred mouse strain with closely related C57BL/6 and C57BL/10 sub strains. Whole genome sequencing and RNA-sequencing analysis of these strains yielded several thousand SNPs, INDELs, short tandem repeats (STRs), structural variants and differentially expressed genes. This study explores the use of polygenic transcriptome risk scores (PTRS) to improve the prediction of transcriptomic data in underrepresented populations. The article, “Genes identified in rodent studies of alcohol intake are enriched for heritability of human substance use”, has been accepted for publication in Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research. This article discusses the use of GeneWeaver to enrich rodent alcohol & nicotine gene-sets for heritability of substance use traits in humans. The article, “Analysis of independent cohorts of outbred CFW mice reveals novel loci for behavioral and physiological traits and identifies factors determining reproducibility“, has been accepted for publication in G3. This study identifies the factors that impact reproducibility of GWAS studies in mice and demonstrates methods to obtain robust results from mapping complex traits in GWAS studies.

The manuscript , “Genome-wide association study of problematic opioid prescription use in 132,113 23andMe research participants of European ancestry”, has been provisionally accepted for publication in Molecular Psychiatry. Dr. Sandra Sanchez-Roige is the first author and Dr. Abraham Palmer is the last author; they are also co-corresponding authors. In addition, Mariela Jennings, Sevim Bianchi, and Yuye Huang, who are members of Dr. Sanchez-Roige’s lab, are co-authors. The article, “Functional validation of a finding from a mouse genome-wide association study demonstrates that Azi2 influences the acute locomotor simulant response to methamphetamine”, has been accepted for publication in Genes, Brain, and Behavior. This article discusses the potential mechanisms of Azi2 and its role in methamphetamine sensitivity. Dr. Abraham Palmer, Dr. Amanda Barkley-Levenson, Xinzhu Zhou and several others co-authored this article. Congratulations!

The article, “Dissecting indirect genetic effects from peers in laboratory mice” identifies genetic loci underlying associations between the phenotype of one mouse and genotypes of its cage mates (“indirect genetic effects”). It also clarifies the relationship between loci underlying classical (“direct”) genetic effects and indirect genetic effects. The experimental data collected in the Palmer lab by Dr. Amelie Baud, Dr. Amanda Barkley-Levenson and undergraduate student Nilgoun Farhadi between 2017 and 2020 were critical to validate a locus identified by GWAS of indirect genetic effects. The article, “Integration of Evidence across Human and Model Organism Studies: A Meeting Report”, was accepted for publication in Genes, Brain, and Behavior. This article discusses a meeting attended by a diverse panel of scientists to examine better strategies for integrating genetic, epigenetic and epigenomics data in human and model organisms to obtain a greater mechanistic insight in substance use disorders.
