The 19th Annual Meeting of the Complex Trait Community (CTC) was held in collaboration with the Rat Genomics Community at the University of Colorado on September 29th and 30th, 2022. Palmer lab members, Dr. Palmer, Dr. Polesskaya, Apurva Chitre, Brittany Leger, and Denghui Chen had attended and presented in person. Post Docs Dan Munro and Joel Leal Gutierrez had attended and presented virtually.

The manuscript, “The regulatory landscape of multiple brain regions in outbred heterogeneous stock rats”, has been accepted for publication in Nucleic Acids Research. This study provides the most comprehensive mapping of gene regulatory variation in outbred rats to date and introduces the RatGTEx resource. Palmer lab members, Dan Munro, Apurva Chitre, Oksana Polesskaya, Jianjun Gao, and Abraham Palmer are co-authors along with several others.

The manuscript, “Genetic characterization of outbred Sprague Dawley rats and utility for genome-wide association studies”, has been accepted for publication in PLOS Genetics. A genome wide association study (GWAS) was performed to characterize the genetic differences of Sprague Dawley (SD) rats sourced from Charles River Laboratories and Harlan Sprague Dawley Inc. The manuscript, “Genome-wide association study on three behaviors tested in an open field in heterogeneous stock rats identifies multiple loci implicated in psychiatric disorders”, was accepted for publication in Frontiers Psychiatry, section Addictive Disorders. A genome-wide association study (GWAS) of behaviors measured in an open field was conducted in HS rats. 30 genome wide significant quantitative trait loci and 13 candidate genes were identified for these traits. Dr. Polesskaya presented a poster titled “High-throughput genotyping of zebrafish enables GWAS in outbred EKW population” at the 16th International Zebrafish Conference (IZFC).  Coauthors from the Palmer lab includes Dr. Riyan Cheng, Apurva Chitre, Bonnie Lin, Khai-Minh Nguyen, and Dr. Abraham Palmer. Alan Lin joined the Palmer Lab in June 2021 as a REHU summer student. He is a rising senior at Williams College majoring in Biology and Statistics, and he hopes to use both fields to pursue a career in bioinformatics/biostatistics.
